Wide band, A/F Ratio and narrow band Oxygen Sensors

Oxygen sensors have become standard parts in gasoline engines, and their main purpose is to detect the remaining oxygen content in the exhaust gas. For a gasoline engine with a homogeneous mixture, the core principle is to precisely control the air-fuel ratio of the mixture, so as to adjust the fuel injection pulse width to the theoretical air-fuel ratio 14.7 range.

At this time, the excess air coefficient λ is about 0.997~0.999.

Only in this range, the catalyst has higher conversion efficiency for NO, HC, and CO.

Oxygen sensors are generally divided into two types, the traditional narrow range oxygen sensors only give 2 status signals: rich or lean; whereas wide-band oxygen sensor gives a series of continuous signals, any oxygen concentration corresponds to a signal.

The newly developed wide oxygen sensor can accurately feedback the air-fuel ratio in the range of 10:1~30:1. The wide band normally have 5 wires, but denso also have AF ratio sensor which is 4 wire sensor gives continuous signals.
